Porta³ – The Open-Air Event in front of the Porta Nigra

This event has potent-ial, in the truest sense of the word – namely, to make the next-to-last June weekend into a real blockbuster. Porta³ (Porta to the third power), that’s the three evenings times three artists times three genres. The result: potential bliss with great names, good music, and boisterous atmosphere. Rock and pop, classic, and cabaret, soul, jazz, punk and funk – everything is allowed that gets an audience excited. And all that at the landmark the Roman Empire bequeathed to Trier: at the Porta Nigra. People will dance informally and sing, celebrate, and just enjoy themselves here where once upon a time the residents of a wealthy capital city strolled and Roman soldiers defended the defiant city walls. Thousands of visitors can confirm the excitement of these three days every year. You, too, will be excited about this potential – so join in, by all means!

Thirty years of “Fury in the Slaughterhouse” – an excellent reason to celebrate in 2017. And not just anywhere: The successful rock band from Hanover comes to the Moselle for that reason and will perform the first concert of next year’s Porta to the Third Power Festival.

Fury in The Slaughterhouse And, indeed, a genuine heavy weight of the German rock landscape will arrive on the Moselle with “Fury.” As early as the beginning of the year, the band provided a sensation when it announced three anniversary concerts for the spring of 2017 eight years after their official separation. But the dates in Hanover were sold out within a brief period. “This response was incredibly overwhelming and motivated us to think beyond the three concerts in Hanover. What came of that is a small, fine summer open-air tour,” as the singer Kai Wingenfelder said. However, it can’t be said that this is really a comeback. For now, the finale is after 2017. The year of the band’s 30th anniversary will be a great reunion and crowning finale all in one. With the complete lineup, the six passionate musicians will tie into the great moments of their band’s history when they sold over four million records, played more than 1000 concerts, and were one of the few German bands that even broke into the American market. The fans can look forward to such hits as “Won’t forget these days,” “Every generation got its own disease,” and “Time to wonder” but also to new songs. And the killer: Trier is up to now the only venue in the southwest of the country. What a kick-off for “Porta to the Third Power!”

At the latest, since color has shone through the white shirt sleeves of bank employees and insurance salesmen, tattoos and metal in the face are no longer what distinguishes artists such as Jennifer Weist. Rather more in the direction of how she radically carries out her performance as the front man for “Jennifer Rostock.” It’s only  in connection with the lyrics she screams out into the world, in the anger, the defiance, and the exuberance she sings with which clearly defines the niche she belongs in.

The lead singer Jennifer Weist and her boys have been in demand as never before since her fifth full-length album stormed to the number 2 spot in the album charts in late summer and the band published a highly recognized video on Facebook in the run-up to the election, where she was critical of the German political party Alternative for Germany (AfD). Their newest album is called “Genau in diesem Ton” (in exactly this tone) and is an agitprop pamphlet turned into music, a plea for the courage to listen in to ourselves, to test ourselves, to love ourselves as we are but also the bitter reckoning with a society completely unraveling at the seams: In songs such as “Hengstin” (against sexism), "Wir sind alle nicht von hier” (All of us are not from here), ”Silikon gegen Sexismus” (Silicon against sexism), the band founded in Usedom on the Baltic sends a rejection to all those little racist and sexist minds and gives a loud voice to modern emancipation, self-determination, and openness with others.

+++ UPDATE +++

More Classic, More Picnic, More Porta³!

It was only an idea in the beginning; at the end, a surprise became a sure thing after extensive discussion with all participants, a surprise for all music enthusiasts. Again this year, a free picnic concert by the Trier Philharmonic Orchestra will be held in front of the Porta Nigra. As a part of "Porta ³" Festival, it will replace the expensive program "MusiCult," which originally was planned for the same venue.

With the slogan "Love, Death, and Jealousy" the program of the picnic concert in 2017 will again consist of a mixture of classic, opera, and movie music.

Purchased tickets can now be returned to all ticket agencies. However, whoever wants to be at the picnic concert should keep the ticket and return it on June 18 at the concert: those who have already purchased a ticket will be reimbursed at the entrance until 7:30 p.m. and will receive a voucher which guarantees a seat in a reserved area. Starting at 7:30 p.m., this exclusive area will be opened for other picnic concert goers. The concert itself begins at 8:00 p.m.
