Slate Show Mine Fell
The Slate Show Mine Barbara-Hoffnung in the Nossern Valley between Fell and Thomm consists of a typical two-story roofing slate mine from the turn of the 20th century. The two shafts are joined by a stair shaft about 330 ft/100 m long. A tour lasts about an hour, with the accessible stretch being about 1/3 mi/450 m long.
About 300 ft/70 m belowground, the visitor can see up close the heavy and dangerous work of the slate miners demonstrated by life-size figures, the so-called “Leyenbrecher” (rock breakers). The long shafts are astounding, the underground waste heaps, and the massive shaft supporting walls, the impressive underground “cathedral”, the highest “room and pillar” chamber of the Nossern Valley. Expert guides explain the technique of slate mining and the finishing process for roofing slate tiles.
During preparations for the mine hiking trail project, it was planned to establish a show mine to give visitors the opportunity to see inside the impressive mine shafts where roofing slate was mined under often the most difficult conditions in large “rooms.”
