Cathedral Square/Cathedral City

Going back into the early Middle Ages, a wall defined an area surrounding the Cathedral, the close, whose center today comprises, along with the Cathedral, the recently redesigned Cathedral Square with the grandiose view onto the Romanesque west façade of the Cathedral and the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady. Town palaces, clergy houses in front of and behind the Cathedral (with narrow lanes and high walls) illustrate that here was a distinct quarter of the city, imbued with Christianity from the Late Antiquity of the Roman Emperor Constantine.
