St. Maximin

The church building of the former imperial abbey St. Maximin’s is today a gymnasium and event hall. But St. Maximin’s is famous for the Christian cemetery lying underneath the old church building, where several hundred graves and stone sarcophagi are partially stacked on top of one another – the only burial ground of its kind north of the Alps! Small groups can visit this cemetery every 1st Friday of the month. The church building above belonged to St. Maximin’s Abbey, one of the most important abbeys in the Holy Roman Empire. After several destructions and reconstructions, the monastery was dissolved in the period of the French Revolution.
