Trier for All

Information and planning

Even the Roman poet Ausonius knew that the Moselle, with its typical river bends reflecting the most diverse of rock formations and vineyards, was something very special. It was the Moselle that once made Trier rich as a trade route – as attested by the famous Neumagener Weinschiff, which served as a stone sculpture atop the tomb of a Roman wine merchant and can today be admired at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. Find it too boring just to look? On the 'Stella Noviomagi', the true-to-scale replica of the wine ship, you can lend a hand from 2022 yourself and cruise the Moselle as a real Roman retiarius (‘rower’).

For something less sweat-inducing, enjoy one or two-hour panoramic cruiseswhere you pass by the 1800-year-old basalt pylons of the Roman Bridge, or wave to St Mary’s Column perched high above the Moselle.

Half or full-day trips are available: Make the most of the day to take an excursion to the medieval Saarburg, where the very placid Leukbach still manages to thunder down 18 metres in the heart of the old town. In Bernkastel-Kues, you’ll amble around the picturesque old town and, like every other visitor, marvel at the Spitzhäuschen building. Home to a wine tavern, it’s not quite straight, but that’s what makes it all the more original and narrow. In Traben-Trarbach, climb to the ruins of Grevenburg Castle and savour a spectacular view over the Moselle. On the way to Grevenmacher, you’ll cross the Luxembourg border to visit the Butterfly Garden at your destination. And those who can’t get enough of the Moselle at night can put their dancing shoes on for a moonlight cruise, before relaxing on the deck and enjoying a stunning view of the old fishing village of Zurlauben.
