General, emperor, philosopher – where does this image come from and how has it developed in the centuries that followed?

In our current perception, the successful general seems to have taken a back seat to the image of the philosopher emperor. Beatrix Bouvier explains this change in image and our current image of Marcus Aurelius using selected exhibits.
