"I learned to endure freedom of expression": Excerpts from Aurelius's "Meditations" are the focus of the staged reading. How do sources on the persecution of Christians contrast with his philosophical writings, which are still worth reading today? Surviving interrogation transcripts illustrate Christian rejection of the imperial cult. But Aurelius also defines martyrdom as a "tragic display."
A very private picture is revealed in his correspondence with his tutor, Fronto. And who was Faustina, his wife? She will make a striking statement. Lucretius's description of the plague, contemporary poetry, and musical elements complement the collage.
Contributors: Elke Hennig, Sandra Karl, Johannes Metzdorf, Michael Roller
Musical accompaniment: Tommy Reinermann
Script & Direction: Uschi Britz
