Christmas Tour - Costume Tour through the City’s Winter Wonderland

Granted, not a lot is known about the historic St Nicholas of Myra. But the legends surrounding him are epic: St Nicholas is said to have repeatedly looked after predominantly kidnapped, sick or distressed children. The fact that he today fills the stockings of well-behaved children on Christmas Eve, however, is based on another legend, according to which, on three consecutive nights, the pious bishop is said to have thrown a gold nugget through the window of a house where a poor man lived with his three daughters. The generous dowry paid off, and all three daughters were able to be married off.

While the veracity of these legends remains largely unclear, one thing is for certain: St Nicholas most definitely did not run around in a red and white suit as a bishop, which is why our St Nicholas wears the classic costume of a mitre, bishop’s crosier and crimson cloak. He also has a whole host of enthralling stories to tell about the first bishops of Trier and a miracle healing, a bishop with a name like a backside, and small cherubs who revealed the seasons to the archbishop.
