While the veracity of these legends remains largely unclear, one thing is for certain: St Nicholas most definitely did not run around in a red and white suit as a bishop, which is why our St Nicholas wears the classic costume of a mitre, bishop’s crosier and crimson cloak. He also has a whole host of enthralling stories to tell about the first bishops of Trier and a miracle healing, a bishop with a name like a backside, and small cherubs who revealed the seasons to the archbishop.
