Getting Your Feet Wet – The Trier Fountain Tour

Only those who take the plunge into the cold water will truly appreciate the fountains of Trier. In any case, they’re worth it, for they’ve certainly done themselves up for their many visitors. On this tour, they’ll recount the city’s entire history, from the Celts to the most recent of times; it was only in 1984 that the city was gifted three new fountains to mark its 2000th birthday. But no matter how many centuries the water has been spurting – sometimes quietly lapping, sometimes loudly crashing, sometimes gently gliding, sometimes frothily sloshing – into its pool, the fountains were never purely basic objects of daily use; they were representative pieces and displays of power, often with highly symbolic meanings. And yet so many of them tell the history of not only the rulers, but also the town clowns and ‘Trier originals’.
