Even though centuries of retelling and elaboration have meant many a historic fact is now heavily shrouded in legend, it’s still definitely entertaining. Which is why it’s not just Franz Weissebach, but also Loretta von Sponheim, Caspar Olevian, the alleged martyrs of the Theban Legion, dialect poet Cläre Prem, and the busy empress Helena, who enthral audiences with their sometimes captivating, sometimes amusing and sometimes curious anecdotes. They also answer the question of how sparkling wine ended up in the water pipes, and what practical joke the Trier city ghost likes to play.
