Trier for All

Online | Over 2000 Years, From Antiquity to the Present Day

Join us digitally on a journey through more than 2000 years of history: Trier was founded in 17 BC by the Roman Emperor Augustus. It all began with the river, which forms the city's lifeline, and the construction of the first Moselle bridge, which today serves as proof that Trier is the oldest city in Germany.

The centuries that followed meant an immense rise for the Moselle metropolis: from a provincial capital in the 1st century AD to the capital of the Roman Western Empire in late antiquity. The emperor had his seat here back then, as can still be seen today from the numerous imposing buildings. Thanks to the archbishops and electors, the Middle Ages left behind imposing sacred buildings such as the Cathedral with its ancient centre and the oldest Gothic church in Germany, the Liebfrauenkirche. Today, Trier is a cosy city and popular shopping destination in the heart of Europe - the southern flair of the Romans still lives on in the mentality of the Mosel people.
